Gardens are a source of food, community spirit, and joy. The tenants at the Herring Cove Apartment and the Rebuilding have poured their hearts and pride of place into creating and maintaining front gardens at the building. They need funds for plants, soil, and basic garden tools to continue this project.
Did you know the only pets allowed in our supported housing units are fish? Fish Project funds will go to providing tanks, supplies, and a new fish friend for any tenant who would like to have a pet. The fish provide companionship (great listeners!), a sense of connection and purpose, and enhance joy and dignity. Supported housing is more than a place to stay - it's a stable, supported home. And pets are an important part of many homes. Your donation to the Fish Project is an investment in connection and caring.

Can’t make a full meal for multiple people through our volunteer program? No problem! You can contribute funds to help ensure every one of our guests, residents, and tenants get nutritious meals 365 days a year. Our meal budget is over $100k annually, which sounds like a lot but it only adds up to about 86 cents per person per meal for the more than 116,070 meals we serve each year -- and, as you know, food prices just keep going up! Every contribution counts. Your $25 gift helps maintain food security for those we serve.

1 in 6 households in Nova Scotia is food insecure, pushing more people in our community into hard decisions about paying rent or putting food on the table. Food bank usage is up 20% in the past year alone. Your $50 gift helps relieve that stress and fill empty fridges for our neighbours supported through the Trustee and Housing Hub programs as well as tenants in our supported housing facilities.

Moving into a new home, it’s the “little things” that add up. Your $25 donation helps purchase those small items every household needs – it might be a dish rack, boot tray, laundry hampers, a garbage can, toilet paper, or a shower curtain. These sort of budget-busting small things have a huge impact.

The person with the most knowledge of what you really need, is you. The people we serve are no different. Shelter Nova Scotia maintains a gift card fund to purchase grocery, various store, and Visa gift cards to help those we serve in our facilities and throughout the community. Gift cards allow people to purchase exactly what they need most and to do so with independence and dignity.
Shelter Nova Scotia works around the clock, 365 days a year to give people in crisis a place to sleep and support them as they transition to supportive housing and community living. We operate six facilities and provide beds for up to 106 people each night. The gift of "a night's rest" is the crucial first step for an individual transitioning from homelessness to community.

What are the kitchen essentials you couldn’t do without? A slow cooker, a microwave, quality knives, an electric can opener? We need them all. The wish list of “missing” appliances and cooking utensils is long in our facilities where shared cooking and eating together builds community. We also need four full dish sets for immediate use and funds to stock kitchens with dishes, cutlery, and pots & pans for people moving into housing or struggling to maintain their homes.

The easiest way to save space in a small room is to use a wall mount for the television. We would like to outfit each unit for the Rebuilding tenants with one to improve livability. Fleming house also needs an entertainment centre for their communal television and equipment. Your $75 buys one wall mount system or contributes towards the cost of a cabinet.
Cell phones are lifelines to communication, accessing services, and connection to loved ones. Education, basic services, employment, connecting with family, getting general information, even giving to your favourite charity – it’s all done online. Our technology fund helps provide cell phones, relief funds to maintain service, and purchase computer equipment for our various facilities.
