WE NEED TO ACT FAST!
A vital 22,000-acre tract of pristine rainforest is under threat from an organization who plan to log the land and clear it for agriculture. We need to save this primeval wilderness from the chainsaws and flames. Spanning both sides of the Upper Las Piedras river, this land is key to protecting the wildlife and wellbeing of the entire region - a region that includes old growth forest, rare and endangered species and tribes living in voluntary isolation.
ARC has $115,000 in reserve toward the purchase of this land - we’re already almost half way there! Now we’re looking for people like you to help us secure the rest. A gift of $100 will allow ARC to protect an entire acre of this precious land, to secure it for our future generations before it’s too late.
THE ARC STORY
I’m Jana Bell the founder and president of Amazon Rainforest Conservancy (ARC), a registered Canadian charity committed to saving the Amazon rainforest one acre at a time.
I've witnessed the destruction of the Amazon first hand. I have seen vast areas of ancient primary rainforest devastated by illegal logging. I've visited illegal gold mining camps that have transformed pristine wilderness into mercury-polluted moonscapes. I’ve walked the new roads slicing through previously remote and inaccessible areas, where indigenous people’s right to live in voluntary isolation have been ripped away.
It was these startling experiences that propelled me to launch ARC in 2014 - I could not believe what I was seeing and felt an overwhelming responsibility to get involved.
The WWF and the Zoological Society of London recently released a report documenting how wildlife populations have plummeted by almost 70% in the past 50 years due to deforestation, agriculture and species overexploitation. The United Nations Intergovernmental Platform on Biodiversity and Ecosystem Services (IPBES) has also raised the alarm: more than a million species of plants and animals face imminent extinction. Many of these species can only be found in the Amazon rainforest.
Amazon Rainforest Conservancy (ARC) currently protects 3,500 acres of untouched rainforest in the Peruvian Amazon. We’re the proud protectors of many endangered wildlife species on our land, including jaguars, howler monkeys, harpy eagles, giant armadillos and black caiman.
WHY SUPPORT ARC
In North America, we’re all volunteers working from our homes. This means we don’t have the executive salaries and overheads of some other conservation groups, so every dollar you donate to this campaign goes entirely toward protecting the Amazon.
Change is possible.
In these challenging times it’s more important than ever that we stand together to protect and defend what’s left of the Amazon Rainforest. This is one of the most meaningful investments we can make for our future generations, and for the good of our planet.
