Continuing Care, Central hasn't added a story.
COVID changed a lot of things in our lives. It separated us by social distance yet brought us closer together. It frightened us but showed us the hope and goodwill in others. For most of us, It highlighted in our community where help was needed most. For Shelter Nova Scotia, it changed some of the ways we provide support and care - from safety protocols that ultimately increased privacy and dignity for the people we serve to the way we approach donations.
We launched our Care & Comfort Wish List last year to purchase the typically donated items we could no longer collect in person. The result was an amazing success! Donors like you gave generously and loved the convenient process . A few clicks and you were able to make a huge difference . Not only were we able to continue to provide essentials, we could do it more efficiently, buying what people needed when they needed it, streamlining storage, and prioritizing the most urgent necessities. It was a win for everyone. Thank you so much for your support!
Via our six facilities, Shelter Nova Scotia provides a safe place to stay for 106 people in need every day of the year and support services to over 1,000 individuals and families annually. The needs are great and - with rising costs and the current housing crisis - steadily growing. This holiday season we are again asking people like you to give generously through our Care & Comfort Wish List.
The process is simple:
- Purchase an item - or two or 10! Multiple donations can be made easily by selecting the quantity you wish to give.
- We are notified and then use the money to make the purchase.
- The people we serve in our facilities and throughout the community get what they need!
Want to give Shelter Nova Scotia donations as gifts for friends, family, teacher presents, or business contacts? The automated email confirmation of your donation includes a printable postcard to let the person know that their gift is helping others.
With the support of our community we aim to provide the utmost care & comfort to our clients, guests, tenants and residents. The wish list includes the type of things so many of us are able to take for granted in our daily lives - grocery store gift cards to purchase food, a warm cup of coffee, internet access to connect to services and education, safe, comfortable beds, and basic items like underwear, deodorant and shampoo that mean so much to someone's health and dignity. Your gifts are essential to providing all these things.
Thank you so much from all of us at Shelter Nova Scotia for choosing to make a difference!

“May your coffee be stronger than the challenges you face.” A hot cup of coffee or tea may be just the thing someone needs to better face the challenges, warm body and spirit, and connect with others. That’s why we have free coffee and tea available to everyone at our six facilities and in our drop in Housing Hub. Your $10 donation helps pay for the coffee, tea, and fixins’ – sugar, milk, cream.

Moving into a new home, it’s the “little things” that add up. Your $25 donation helps purchase those small items every household needs – it might be a dish rack, boot tray, laundry hampers, alarm clocks and clock radios, a garbage can, toilet paper, or a shower curtain. These sort of budget-busting small things have a huge impact.

1 in 6 households in Nova Scotia is food insecure, pushing more people in our community into hard decisions about paying rent or putting food on the table. Your $50 gift helps relieve that stress and fill empty fridges for our neighbours supported through the Trustee and Housing Hub programs.

Can’t make a full meal for multiple people through our volunteer program? No problem! You can contribute funds to help ensure every one of our guests, residents, and tenants get nutritious meals 365 days a year. Our meal budget is over $100k annually, which sounds like a lot but it only adds up to about 86 cents per person per meal for the more than 116,070 meals we serve each year -- and, as you know, food prices just keep going up! Every contribution counts. Your $25 gift helps maintain food security for those we serve.

The easiest way to save space in a small room is to use a wall mount for the television. We would like to outfit each unit for the Rebuilding tenants with one to improve livability. Fleming house also needs an entertainment centre for their communal television and equipment. Your $75 buys one wall mount system or contributes towards the cost of a cabinet. Update: What's that? We reduced the number we needed? YES! Thanks to a generous donation to cover the purchase of 12 units!

It's always best to "give the gift of choice" because, at the end of the day, the person with the most knowledge of what you really need, is you. The people we serve are no different. We will use this money to purchase grocery, various store, and Visa gift cards for 300+ people this holiday season. Gift cards allow people to purchase exactly what they need most and to do so with independence and dignity.

What are the kitchen essentials you couldn’t do without? A slow cooker, a microwave, quality knives, an electric can opener? We need them all. The wish list of “missing” appliances and cooking utensils is long in our facilities where shared cooking and eating together builds community. We also need four full dish sets for immediate use and funds to stock kitchens with dishes, cutlery, and pots & pans for people moving into housing or struggling to maintain their homes.

What if everything you owned was in a bag or two? And you had to move it from place to place frequently until you could settle in a permanent home? A sturdy, water – resistant, easy to carry bag would protect your belongings and make that transition just a little easier. Funds will also be used for other assorted bags, wallets, and suitcases.
